Tessie is a normal girl. Normal by her standards, at least. She's had some rough places in her life she wishes she could smooth out. Like with her sister, Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn and her have fought over ever small detail about everything since they were old enough to talk. Such as who would go with their mother to go grocery shopping and who would stay home and clean. Tessie's father left quite a while ago. When she was five years old. That's 10 years ago. She never stops wishing she could bring him back. Every day when she wakes up, she thinks 'Dad must be home from work!' It happens every morning, with no exception. It doesn't seem to fit in her busy head. She has to think cleverly. 'When will the next opportunity be?' When will I get this chance again?' How can I get money to help Mom?' These are all too frequent questions for her.
Then Tessie found a friend. Without her mother knowing, she was taught how to play the old piano in the church down the street. An old woman who had seen both Tessie and Kaitlyn in their faded clothing took pity on her and invited her to listen to the choir practice in the warm, dry church. After that, Tessie found new hope. The hope that a simple act of kindness can bring.
