The H5 subway trains were built between 1976-1979 and are currently serving the Yonge-University-Spadina line. In 1981, 5755 was in a split switch accident at Greenwood yard. 5755 was retired in June 1984 and was scrapped in Nov 1985. After when 5755 was retired, the original 5754 was rebuilt became a double end "A" or "B" car in Nov 1985. It was used as a testing car or revenue service.
On June 11, 1995, 5721 (as a lead car) crashed into an H1 train while in revenue service on the Yonge-University-Spadina (YUS) line between Eglinton West and St. Clair West Station. The crashed killed 3 people. 5721 was retired in December 1998. When 5721 was retired, 5720 (which was the mate of 5721) was renumbered to "5754". The original 5754 (which was the mate of 5755 that was in the accident in 1981) was renumbered to "5755". Example: 5754 (ex 5720)-5755 (ex 5754)
Between July to December 1990, 5796 was modified by the Urban Transportation Development Corporation (UTDC) to create as a "T1 prototype" for the T1 subway trains. The exterior and interior were redone to make to make the T1 prototype.
All of the TTC H5 trains have been retired as of June 14, 2013. The retirement schedule is located at the bottom.
The H5's cars were received rebuilt between 1997 to 2000 as the cars started to experience rust issues. The H5 trains will start retiring right after all of the H4's have been retired. The H5's will be replaced by the new "Toronto Rocket" subway cars.
When the TTC starts it's H5 train retirements they will be shipped down to United States for refurbishment. Then they will be sent down to it's final destination in Lagos, Nigeria as the trains will be part of the Lagos' Eko Rail light rail system.
5721 was retired due to accident in 1995. 5720 was renumbered to 5754.
The original 5755 was retired in 1983 due to accident. The original 5754 was renumbered to 5755.
5796 is the T1 prototype subway car.
